MCUs Eternais: just bad from tiop to bottom.
Eternals: Deep rooted problems in the movie as whole!
The rushed story, stale dialogue, undeveloped characters and overlooking of previous Marvel Movies canon are just the Tip of the Iceberg that Sunk the Titanic potential the Eternals could of offered us.
And we would of happily taken it!
The introduction of the celestial's was glosses over:
The only MCU movie I personally found underwhelming and depth lacking was Eternals as well as it poorly gave much detail on celestials and making sure us care to invest interest or care in their MCU reoccurrence. Many of modern day comic fans haven't actually ever read a comic book and quite a vast amount don't research the history of different Comic book series of the same characters, or even events in the comic's. To them a celestial is just another throw away life-form of another Space villain/Space order of bad guys, because of their minor part of the movie with not much background about them got slipped in. Besides the fact they(the Celestials) create Eternals to guide the most sentient species of their home world through the ages as well as the Eternals protect the planets life forms, they're assigned to, from deviants which they also create to do harm to the aforementioned life forms. All to create a baby celestial that can only hatch if the planets life force reaches a certain capacity and evolution. - Which in the greater scheme of things, sounds like higher beings, very bored and their idea of entertainment is seeing if their offspring can survive a 50/50 chance in a scenario they've purposefully designed as if it's some sort of game. Other than that, not much is said about them. They could of contrived some sort of plot armour like it was to keep them battle savvy if Galactus was to come looking for dinner. ~ A pre-emptive set-up to another series of phases, ready for after Kang the Conqueror phases are over, to cement Galactus in the Major ending of the Gen 3 Phases. Creating a true branch throughout the MCU between the gen's of phases.
Gen 1: Phase 1 - 3 = Rise of the Heroes, cementing said heroes through battle, addition with gaining new allies and overcoming their differences and fallouts. Ending on the Thanos being the Major villain.
Gen 2: phase 4 - ? = My Assumptions based on what we have seen so far; Young Avengers, Multiverse war, resolution for peace along with allies from different Universes and Ending on the Major Villain.
Only problem is, with no background info on the Celestials; they are the variable of chaos as to where this could all lead.
*Advisory warning, the following scenario is a concept I created to establish a reference of mind, to make my point on the feelings of uneasiness*
Which creates an illusion of a major red-flag they might pull the Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 3 concept and over stuffing Gen 2 with having two major villains(Kang being Sandman and Galactus being Venom), whilst a character like Hela can be Goblin Jnr.(Redemption moment) ~ She has the Necro Sword
*Scenario completed: End of Scenario fears*
And this worry could be cleared up by mentioning Galactus, but giving no details outside he is a Cosmic being that is the race Taa-an and he feeds on Celestial incubator planet's, .Also this concept of dialogue about Galactus, which might seem throw away to those with minimal comic lore/background. Tells us, yes celestials are Powerful ancient, sentient beings, but they don't sit atop the power vacuum and are survivalist like everyone else and any species at that. But it's also a foreshadowing reference to Galactus.
Gen 3: Phase ?? - Phase ?? = Silver Surfer as like the first Avengers Villain; Loki (except ending on him becoming an ally), Space Saga/Planet of the Hulk(just because I want to see this done in Live Action as well as I.agine that She Hulk is apart is part of the Planet of the Hulk story. Maestroas becoming the ~second Avengers level threat~ villain; Ultron. Finishing off with Galactus being the Major Villain, that is going to be a showdown of epic proportions.
You would expect a minor villain such as The Collector having as much info as the celestials were given
Ignoring MCU specific Lore and other key points
Whilst same as the comics we now have a Homo-sapien looking brother, Eros, of Thanos;
Thanos, whom has been seen amongst his own in flashbacks
So with the very open gaping maw of the deviant gene mutation possibly being mentioned later in Gen 2 phase. Canonically it's been established/cemented I the MCU lore, in the Gen 1 phases, that Thanos can't be a mutation if Titan was full of the Titan race and Eros was the only bipedal walking Mange Ape.
A) It's an easy fix which still nods at the original lore, as well as this creates much more depth to his character and could be good filler arc fodder in future movies. Also adding to the Eros origin/back story:
But it's not like the Eternals left us with many other viable options that don't turn into a Frankenstein fix or lack sense.
Then we have the problem with ego in the MCU, as it's obvious to even a blind person, ego is not a Celestial like the others (wasn't even one in the comics to begin with).
This could of been easily addressed in The Eternals, if they said the planet Hatched Celestials, are the oldest/most ancient race of celestial or something..
Were also left wondering what do these Celestials bring to the table that already developed MCU heroes can't already do, but are more versatile.
The lack of anything beyond two-dimensional characters and The Characters as well as their powers
Had no character depth or Development and and relied on visual - i.e sprites age, Ikaris and his whole values) to connect the dots.. is well, lazy and poorly executed.. also that petty argument that split the eternals up . Is a weekend get together, over it by Monday, type ordeal.. not centuries of avoiding one another conflict. This would be considered
Sprites jealousy and crush overall/on Ikaris is some high schooler mentality BS, and her selective blindness to his inner darkness is Battered Souse Syndrome psychology..it was a weak story arc, with weak plot driving arcs.. and created more holes in previous plots then it will be answering in future plots. It COULD of been a really great Series as long as it took the time to figure out how to address these plot holes/inconsistencies.
The Eternals are pretty much a bunch of underpowered one trick ponies, with only Makkari having a decent versatile skill set. And outclasses her MCU predecessor (Quicksilver in terms of ability already).
Ikaris - was a hacky Superman version, with less personality then Clark Kent (which truly, I didn't think possible), and yet he rinses and repeats his skill set in small time frames . Which is a whole of 4 moves: Fly, power move, Ikaris Eye beams and giving off the visage that he thinks he is and imposing force.. Technically Ironman and War machine had already filled this Niche with much more versatility.. as has Thor as well.
Gilgamesh was honestly a less battle savvy/hardened Super soldier.
Thena Kind of falls under this as well, but they made her damaged goods by the end of the opening quarter, The beserker mode she goes into is more akin to Norse mythology/Vilings and NOT Greek mythology. Which Greek gods are more akin to tactical battles.
Sersi "ooh I'm going to put it to sleep".. Mantis anyone?. Oh she does have the added ability of matter transmutation, which is about as useful in the battlefield as a One Legged Ass-Kicker
Ajak, was dial'ed back to Healing and Telepathic Communication and the TeleComm power was only shown to really be used for when she had and Audience with the Celestial.
Phastos was what to the group?
At best he could be called a semi-magic Engineer, that still required the raw materials.. but he has no genius to his programming and doesn't think outside the box like Other Marvel heroes doing their own Engineering, nor the countless Villains that do masterful engineering
Druig, Sprite and Kingo had some cliche powers without the comic powers, nothing that really seperates them from middle-low card heroes/sidekicks.
Druig showing more potentia than everyone besides Ikaris l with Mental Manipulation: An ability to control minds with cosmic energy. Telepathy and Levitation.. very watered down in comparison to his Comics version.
I get they tried to make the Eternals more distinctive by giving them character specific unique abilities in comparison to one another but they should of been defining traits of seperating them Individually, with the comic repeating shared powers as a Eternals specific trait besides 'cosmic energy; which was a power driving trait, not a race distinctive trait/set of traits such as near-immortality, super strength, healing factor, telepathy, illusions, telekinesis, flight and energy projection. (Which in the Comics all Eternals have these traits)
This would of helped set the Eternals apart from Humans in terms of base strengths
Then followed their character specific traits would make them more distinctive and not to mention, it would make them stand out as Game Changers in the MCU.
Because by the time the movie had finished.. my only questions were .
Even if they did step in during Thanos reign, what could they really do, besides be another character in a lesser position fighting abundant races of aliens and not the main Villain or his Stable of cronies..(with the exception of Makkari, as she could of definitely been very useful during the Infinity Gauntlet tkeep away from Thanos part, speed+crowd control with her sonic speed-wave blasting etc.
Closing argument
By giving a more meaningful purpose of the Eternals simply by making them the first line of defense against Galactus, makes them more viable as hero candidates. Instead of the illogical reasoning of "we celestial's have created them, as we created you - though counterproductive to our end goal, we create them to send to any planet we assign you to lead the most sentient species, because we just like to place bets on the survival of Celestial fetuses".
Having it as a TV Series, it Mini-Series, would have been a wiser option to flesh out that many characters and have character development and develop a personality.
Nerfing their powers so you end having a bunch of cosplay enthusiast doing a handful of parlor tricks, to make your Characters more distinctive does not inspire confidence in said heroes if they weren't pillow fighting one another and attempting to kill an unborn fetish. If they had faced off against a number of MCU villains already been beaten by the Avengers and Co.
I guarantee, the majority of the Eternals would be dead before the director called action. Why create a movie on the most powerful Superhero group and then take everything that is combat useful and erase it from the super portfolio?
The hybrid Deviant also felt like a major waste, of build up for the character to pretty much do a whole lot of nothing it seems.
The whole flashbacks to the timelines seem very much' cliche, uninspired and made the a film feel like it was jumping around.
And really, making the obvious traitor, obvious from the start, the end bad guy in a fight scene that was thankfully saved by the grace of Makkari. But after taking away their 'race traited' powers to only have distinctive powers.. left us watching a fight scene you knew the power set wouldn't work on the other. Yet it's scripted to be and is insulting they actually thought out intelligence so low we would just clap like circus seals?
This movie offered almost nothing knew, heavily watered down versions of the comics and the after taste of the movies fake woke incorporated creative re-imagining of more than just Race and Gender, but also the taste of feces, because this movie was a giant turd lump. It could of been a souffle, but they sent me all the wrong direction's with creative licensing and took inspiration far away from its meaning, trying to claim it was heavily inspired by the Marvel comics based on the same group.. because we barely got a rough outline.
Key is to stay close to source material, with minor changes here and there.
Eternals does have one positive thing going for it;
It's still not as bad as Howard the duck.
